This was a meaty project. The cast iron fireplace surround was original but had been painted many times, and the insert had been replaced with a 1990s gas fire. I visited the next door neighbour's house, and matched their original cast iron insert to one found on t'internet at a reclamation yard in Essex. The red tiles hidden beneath the false hearth were original, and a great find. Completely redecorating the entire room involved stripping the floorboards and repairing 12 sections of damaged coving. I also assembled and painted a radiator cover.
